The Center on Law and Security hosted a conversation with Gregory Johnsen, author of The Last Refuge: Yemen, al-Qaeda, and America’s War in Arabia on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. Johnsen discussed the development of al-Qaida in Yemen and America’s policy response, including some of the factors that affect the efficacy of counterterrorism strikes there.  Johnsen offered important insights on the overlapping identities of members of al-Qaida in Yemen, which often complicates American counterterrorism efforts.

Gregory D. Johnsen, a former Fulbright fellow in Yemen, is a PhD candidate in Near Eastern studies at Princeton University and the author of the blog Waq al-waq.  His essays on Yemen have appeared in the New York Times, Foreign Policy, and Newsweek.  A frequent commentator and guest on NPR and CNN, Johnsen has also been a Fulbright-Hays Fellow in Egypt and a Peace Corps volunteer in Jordan.
